Frequent Questions About Midwives

Sure!  If you are having a low-risk, healthy pregnancy, it doesn’t matter whether you are having your first baby or your tenth. Many of our clients are first-timers and have beautiful out of hospital births.

The birth of a child is a very important event that will affect a family forever. As such, choosing the right provider and the right place of birth is an important factor to consider. Midwives recognize pregnancy and birth as normal life events. Homebirth has not only proven to be beneficial for the birthing person, but for the baby and partner as well because:

  • The care offered is individualized, which means that all the decisions made about your care or your baby’s care are made together with you. You will be provided with educational tools and information to make an informed, safe decision.
  • Midwives offer evidence-based care, which means that we are up-to-date on the research regarding pregnancy, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding.
  • Your care is delivered in your own home or our birth center, which means you can feel comfortable and move around without restrictions. You are in control of the situation.
  • The normal process of birth is not interrupted. As your body moves in response to the labor, progress happens more easily, decreasing the need for medical intervention.
  • Bonding with your baby is facilitated through immediate skin-to-skin contact, delayed cord clamping and the early initiation of breastfeeding. You will never be separated from your baby or your partner in a home birth.
  • Giving birth with a licensed midwife offers a measure of control that is generally unavailable in the hospital (freedom to move, eat, bathe).

Of course! We do many waterbirths and we have tubs available to use for your labor whether you plan to deliver in water or not. It is difficult (if not impossible) to know how you will feel when you are in labor. Some people who adore water find that they do NOT like it in labor, or they might love it. Others who have no particular attraction to water find it to be a great relief in labor or delivery. The majority of the time it offers great comfort and relief, which is why we recommend it.

We are proud to keep our rates affordable to most, including offering a sliding scale. We will set up a payment plan using cash, check and card. Extended payment plans are available from United Credit, PayPal Credit and Med Loan Finance.

If you would like to use insurance we can help you get reimbursed by your plan.

The World Health Organization estimates that around 15% of all pregnancies will develop a complication that call for skilled care and some will require a major obstetrical intervention. Your midwife will advise and discuss with you if there is a need for transfer to the hospital. A plan for transfer is put in place during the prenatal period after discussion on which would be the most appropriate hospital for transfer. Midwives are trained to recognize early signs when something is not right.

Recently published studies show that births planned in the birth center and home settings with skilled midwives are safe for low-risk pregnancies. Evidence also demonstrates that those at low risk of complications during the birth have the same outcomes, whether they have their baby in the hospital, birth center or in their home with qualified midwives.

Not normally. In Texas, licensed midwives are recognized as primary care givers from conception to 6 weeks postpartum for both you and baby. That being said, it is part of your midwifes job to be aware of any reason to refer you to a specialist, or even transfer care to an obstetrician.

Community Birth is for anyone who wants to receive individualized, respectful and low intervention care AND whose pregnancy is not complicated by any medical condition. It is for families seeking to be heard and to have their questions answered but who also are healthy and practice a healthy lifestyle.
