Ways to Decrease the Chances of a Perineal Tear During Birth

Tearing during birth is a common fear of ladies we serve of Tyler Birth House.  We give lots of reassurance of things we can do to reduce the chances of a tear. A perineal tear is a common occurrence during childbirth and can cause discomfort and pain. However, there are ways to decrease the chances of a perineal tear during delivery:

  1. Pelvic Floor Exercises: Pelvic floor exercises, also known as Kegels, can help to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, which can help to prevent tears during delivery.
  2. Controlled Pushing: During delivery, controlled pushing can help to prevent tears. This involves pushing slowly and steadily rather than pushing rapidly and forcefully.
  3. Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to the perineum during delivery can help to increase blood flow and make the tissues more elastic, reducing the risk of tearing.
  4. Positioning: Different positions during delivery can help to reduce the risk of tearing. Squatting, for example, can help to widen the pelvic outlet, while lying on one’s back can increase the risk of tearing.
  5. Water Use: There is lots of evidence that hydrotherapy during labor and birth shortens labor and pushing efforts. Water also decreases pain perception and improves mobility options. Warmth of water during pushing allows mothers to instinctually listen to their bodies better to reduce the chances of perineal tears.

At Tyler Birth House, we have minimal amounts of tears thanks to regular implementation of the above resources during labor and birth. We look forward to talking with you about the various options that are available to decrease the chances of perineal tears.
